The Sélèque family

Henri Sélèque planted vines in the 1960s on the renowned terroirs of Moussy and Pierry and began bottling his wines in 1969. Richard, his son, an oenologist, brought the property into the era of modernity and technical precision, while expanding the family wine heritage. Since 2008, Jean-Marc, the third generation and an advocate for more ecologically balanced viticulture, has anchored his production in the search for authenticity and expression of terroirs

Coteaux sud d’Epernay

Nestled between the Marne Valley and the Côte des Blancs, the Coteaux Sud d’Epernay offers a veritable mosaic of terroirs. On these slopes cut by the Cubry River, the three great grape varieties of Champagne flourish on varied soils–clay, sandy or loaded with flint—in which chalk is the common thread. Pierry

The Cradle of the Sélèque family for 3 generations, Pierry is also one of the historical cradles of Champagne: at the end of the 17th century, Brother Oudart (a contemporary of Dom Pérignon) produced some of the very first sparkling wines there, which went on to experience success in the courts of European nobility and even the “New World.” Here, Meunier, chardonnay and pinot noir all achieve complex and balanced expressions balancing fruity density and chalky freshness.

The approach

Jean-Marc is convinced that a Champagne must be a great vin de terroir and that it is in the vineyard that it is born. Preservation of soil life, control of yields, search for natural balance in the grapes, gentle vinification without artifice, long aging: all this is clear to Jean-Marc Sélèque. His champagnes express a vibrant, alive style, balanced between fleshy, vinous generosity, and a sparkling, invigorating minerality.

The Style of Wine

The cornerstone of the “Sélèque” style revolves around the search for the natural balance of wine and the perfect interweaving of fruit and soil. Taking advantage of the diversity of family terroirs (45 plots in 7 villages, Jean-Marc produces wines with expressive, punchy bouquets, carried by a rich, complex and sensual fruitiness. As a counterpoint, chalk and flint offer a mineral, saline or spicy core, which tightens, refines and invigorates the mid-palate.

The Wines

The Solessence cuvée, a wine for sharing par excellence, is a faithful reflection of the diversity of the Coteaux Sud d´Epernay. Solessence is available in Extra-Brut, Rosé and a version with prolonged aging (Brut Nature). The Blanc de Blancs, Quintette, full of nuances and balanced structure, weaves together the best Chardonnay terroirs of the Domaine. The Soloist range honors the terroirs of Pierry: a single plot and a single grape variety come together to interpret a unique score. The Partition cuvée blends the grapes from the most distinctive plots of the Domaine. 7 plots for 7 barrels, like 7 musical notes which create the most harmonious and nuanced score. Jean-Marc’s passion for still wine leads him to vinify Coteaux Champenois, two whites and one red complete the range. And finally, a Ratafia made from end-of-press juices.
